Day 9...
9/365
It's been a noisy past couple of days here.  Travis has been pulling yearlings from their mothers and today was the day to finish that up. Our little cowboy in training was not going to be left behind. He made sure he was up by sunrise, ate his pancakes and bacon, and was out the door when Travis and Thomas started to work.  He thinks he's every bit of 16 or 17 years old but if I try to remind him he's only 5 I get quite the stare down and he tells me, "I can do this momma!" I watched from the outside of the corral as he walked down the lane with his arms held high yelling, "hey cow, hey cow!" Oddly  enough that's all those little babies needed to go in the opposite direction. He wasn't alone, Thomas was near by him. Thomas told me, "he worries me a little bit!" My response was the exact same words.  It frightens me a little to watch him with these creatures that are anywhere from 300-1200 pounds but he loves it. It's something he'll probably do his entire life. If he learns the proper way to do it now, prayerfully we'll avoid any accidents! ;)  I said, prayerfully!

Rodeo time

It's no secret to anyone that knows us, we enjoy going to the rodeo and Carter LOVES it!  A few weeks ago we had the chance to go to a Jr. Rodeo just a few miles away from our house. There were little cowboys all around!!
IMG_4949
Carter was excited to ride a sheep, they call it mutton bustin'.  Travis walked him up on the platform for him to sign up. I was standing a few feet away when I hear the lady say, "we don't have sheep tonight, just baby calfs." My ears perked up, I took a few steps forward, Travis looked back at me and said, "sign him up!" Oh.my.stars!  He just signed my baby up to get on the back of a 120 pound calf, is he insane?! Obviously, right!!
IMG_5005
As they came down to where I was, I asked him if he'd lost his mind. He assured me that Carter would be just fine. I won't lie, my heart was pounding, I was nervous, but hearing him talk about it and see how excited he was a part of me couldn't wait to watch him! We had to wait for a little bit before he could ride. We watched the bull riding, some shoot doggin', and then it was time for the mutton bustin'!!!  You'd think I would be standing there biting my nails, butterflies in my stomach, but I wasn't. I was smiling from ear to ear. He climbed up on top of that calf, and within seconds he was out the gate!
IMG_5012
Within those same seconds of coming out the gate, he was on the ground. His little face covered in red dirt, and a few tears trickling down his face.
IMG_5044
Travis was right there, and I could tell he was fine. I think his spirit was broken more then anything. He made his way to me, and I asked if he was okay. His response, "I've got dirt in my eyes!" I just chuckled, poor kid didn't know what to think or expect.  It wasn't but just a few minutes when he blurted out, "I WANT TO RIDE AGAIN!"
IMG_5047
I looked to Travis and told him he had started something that I wasn't sure would end anytime soon. Our little fellow was as happy as a kid in a candy store. He walked proudly with his black hat, and shuffled his feet through the dirt as if he was a true American cowboy.

To say that Carter is a joy is a complete and utter understatement. He is the light to a gloomy day, the song you need at the lowest point, the warm touch to remind you it's all okay. I am so proud of the Cowboy that he is. I pray that he continues to become the loving, full of life, positive outlook person that he is. As for muttin' bustin', he's not finished. He's ready to go again. Just as soon as he gets the opportunity, he'll be back at it!
IMG_5052
Our local county fair is in town, and the rodeo is coming up this weekend. He can't wait to chase the calf and pull the flag from its tail. I have myself a natural little cowboy!! And I love every minute of it and wouldn't trade it for anything.

Party til the cows come home!

We may not be partying but we can pretend, right?  We have a new friend that is slowly but surely moving her way to the top of the momma cow totem pole. Her name, I'm sad to say, is Number 8!  I don't know why we, I, have never named this sweet, precious momma but for now she's Number 8. Dare I even say she's a bit sweeter than our beloved Lulla Belle?!  SHHHHHH!!!!  Don't breathe a word that I just said that. Lulla would probably pack up and leave town. Ah, who am I kidding that large, waddle walking momma ain't going anywhere!
IMG_4879
Anywho, back to Number 8.  She's one of those cows you can just stand right beside and love on. She's mindful of you being to close to her baby but bring her some bread and you can do whatever you please. A few nights back we went out to check on all the gals in the pasture and I grabbed an old pack of hotdog buns to feed to 8.  She saw us coming and came in a hard trot!
IMG_4880
Tucker was holding a bun in his hand and before we could get it to her mouth she had her head turned and was gobbling up that bread. She not only gobbled up the bread but had his arm in her mouth, up to his elbow!!!  His face was hilarious. As I was laughing she decided to lick me up the side of my face. Have you ever been licked by a cow?  Probably not. So let me just tell you it's like having a piece of sandpaper pulled up your cheek.  It definitely caught me off guard that's for sure!!!

8 more than got herself a belly full of bread that night. Her little bull calf was so cute running around trying to figure out why his momma was being so friendly with these outsiders, us. He wasn't quite brave enough to taste the bread just yet. Give him time.
IMG_4894
There are some other old faithful gals that we know will take a handout if you find them. Little Red is one of them. She's just the cutest thing. Her baby is a pig. I know, she's really a cow, but indeed she looks like a fat, pudgy pig. Her rump looks more round than I can explain to you!

I'm sure your typical farm living, country girl doesn't get as wrapped up in her cows as I do. I know they have a "purpose" but can't we all just be friends and get along?!  Before I let you go you have to see this adorable little cutie that was hiding all alone in the grass as we headed back to the house. How stinkin' cute????

Home

Do you ever drive down your driveway and think, man I love this place?  I do. I think it all the time. I love our home.  Nothing beats coming home.
IMG_3827
I follow so many bloggers that showcase their homes all the time.  I love looking at other peoples decorations, I think it says a lot about the person. So I thought, why not show you all how we live here on Cow Bird Lane.

Here is our kitchen....

I wanted a new breakfast table and ran my thought and vision by Travis and he made this perfect table for me. I had Carter write his name and Tucker's name on the side and then I carved it in so I would always have it to look back on.

Hope you enjoy the glimpse into our world.

Jr. Cowboy

Watching Carter learn the ropes of farm life makes me happy, makes me smile, and sometimes I just have to laugh. He puts his whole heart into and and sometimes more. If I could record the way he talks when he's helping Travis I can promise you it would make you laugh hysterically. He talks like a grown man.

IMG_4026
He's sometimes a little apprehensive about the task, but at other times he's fired up and ready to go. A few weeks ago Travis told him he could put the lead rope on Chance and lead him for a bit. He had his rope in hand and was ready, once inside the gate with Chance he started having second thoughts.  That night, it just didn't happen. A few days later, they tried again and he played the part of Cowboy for sure!  Granted this time he wasn't in his "cowboy pants", but in shorts and flip flops. We consider him the modern cowboy, LOL!!!

Chance wasn't the most cooperative little fellow, but Carter wasn't giving him any slack. He was going to walk on that lead rope and Carter would make sure of it!! Watching him lead Chance made me realize he'll be showing cows at the fair before I know it.  He has to be 8, but in all reality that's just a blink away.  He's so grown up, he makes me proud!!!

Farm Life, is it really for me?!

I just talked to Travis last Wednesday night about wanting to help more with the cows, and learn more about what goes on around here. He was a bit shocked that I really wanted something to do with it all, but it's true... I do. Sometimes with farm living though, this happens........
Blog
A lot of that happened last week, in our yard!!! I didn't think he'd throw me in head first, but he did. On Thursday evening, last week, I hear him open the door and then I hear, "BABE! There's a cow in the yard!" Yeah, really? Okay.  Then I hear an even more panicked call from him, "BABE! The entire herd is in our yard!" Then I heard a really loud slamming of the door. As I came through the kitchen to see what was going on, to my surprise there was the entire herd grazing in our yard. Some of the gals had already ventured out the gate into the drive way.
Blog
All I could think was are you kidding me?! I asked what he wanted me to do and he told me to just hold on. My next question was if I had time to go back inside and get my camera. He told me no. All I could think was are you kidding me?! I have to have my camera, this is good stuff. I totally have to blog about this. But, he was serious. I had to stay put for a minute or so to really help! So here I was standing at the front corner of our house surrounded by the herd of cows. Carter was on the porch and he thought it was the neatest thing since sliced bread.
Blog
Travis was headed to our main gate when he yelled back for me to get the four wheeler. I had to run back inside to get my pound cake out of the oven, check on Tucker who was sleeping, and GET MY CAMERA!  I opted to grab a pair of flip flops while I was in the house. I ran out to the four wheeler only to find the trailer attached to it. I tried my best to yank the trailer off the ball but it would not budge. So then I went into panic mode thinking how on earth will I back this thing up. You know backing up a trailer is a flip flopped process. You turn right to go left, and vice versa. Luckily, I got it on the first try! I, secretly, was so impressed!!!!
Blog
I take the four wheeler out to him, with the trailer, and he has to unhook it. At this point we had cows going every which way. Some still in the yard, some in the old pasture that is now nothing but dirt, some going down to the other pasture that is now home to our fish pond, it was a mess. I stood their helpless, like a blind person unsure of where to go. I kept asking what he wanted me to do. I'm sure I wasn't as helpful as I could have been but seriously.... I didn't sign up to be no cow wrangler!
Blog
After a good thirty minutes or so of throwing my arms in the air (looking completely stupid) and yelling "hey cow!" they started to move. Travis was nudging them towards the gate on the four wheeler, and I was doing the bird flap yelling hey cow. Oh if someone had secretly been watching us and videoing the event, we would be millionaires.
Blog
There were about 6-8 stubborn old gals that just refused to go towards the gate. The rest of the herd was already headed back but they wanted to buck the system a bit. I wasn't paying attention to the girls in the fence since I had already sent Carter to safer ground... the back of Travis' truck. It was about that time when I looked up at Travis and he says, "there goes our garden!" I turned to look back at our house and the herd was plowing through the garden like a bunch of locusts. At that moment my heart sank. Here was my poor husband with this new, completely useless farm hand (me), and a herd of cows plowing down the garden that he had so faithfully tended to for the past several weeks.  I didn't know whether to laugh or cry.
Blog
Finally the stubborn gals made there way towards the fence!  We had conquered them, well kind of. I had to shut the gate which ended up shocking me since there is an electric wire that runs below it. I didn't pay attention that the wire and gate were going to touch, but I found out very quickly!  After securing the gate I headed towards the garden. I had to laugh because it was completely comical. Here was this man that's been living farm life for as long as I've known him, then there was me, not a farming bone in my body and then there was poor Carter in the back of the truck thinking he was at the local rodeo.
Blog
It was all fun until Carter realized the cows were in his corn. All of a sudden you hear this broken little heart yell, "DADDY!!!!  The cows are eating our corn, the cows are eating our corn!" He came over the back of that truck like a mad man. He ran around the front of the house, tears streaming down his face and I did my best to assure him that it would be fine and grow back. Only for Travis to say, "well son, there went our corn!" Thanks Trav, thanks a lot!
Blog
Travis shooed the girls to the gate they should have never came through and the rodeo was over for the day. This farm girl, cow girl, rodeo clown, call me what you will but I've had my fare share for a while! ;)  I think I'll just wait for the boys to grow up and join in the fun of cow wrangling.
Blog
I shall not lie. It was nice to be out there helping Travis, even though I was clueless. I hope that as the years pass and I learn more that we will work this farm as a family. As for our corn, as Travis assessed the damage, I couldn't help but laugh. I told him we were a three ring circus. He just looked at me. Poor guy, I hope the boys are more help to him then I am!!!  I'm sure he wanted to take my camera and beat me over the head!  Although he did get a good laugh when we loaded the pictures. The corn however, not so funny. If it makes, it will be by the grace of the good Lord!!
