Hot Summer Days

The dreadfully hot days of Summer almost seem unbearable at times. When your kids sweat after being outside for just a matter of minutes, you know it's hot!  However, my two could care less about the heat they just want to be outside playing in the dirt and the water hose.

There's a favorite summer snack around these parts, the watermelon. My boys eat their weight in watermelon. I've learned that this sweet little snack is much better prepared outside. They make the messiest of messes. There is juice everywhere, seeds flying by your head as they have seed spitting contests, and their clothes well... if the juice gets on 'em, you can just about throw them in the play clothes stack. They're usually done for.

Then there's the "black dirt". Oh, the dreaded black dirt. If there is black dirt, my children are just drawn to it. I've come accustomed to it now. It's a part of who we are. White socks=dingy grey socks. I vividly remember as a little girl, my momma saying, "Jennifer! put your shoes on or take your socks off!" I am being paid back ten fold for ignoring this request as a child. I buy new, pearly white socks only for them to turn dingy within a week. I give up. Grey it is for the Higg boys.

It's not about the socks. It's not about keeping the boys clean, it's about them enjoying their time as kids. The day that I sat on the porch and shot the pictures of them playing in the "black dirt" is one I'll never forget. For the longest time they had no clue that I was taking pictures of them. That's usually the pictures I end up liking the most. Dirt covered faces, clothes, and skin. They play so hard they even get dirt in places we won't discuss.

Just look at their faces and smiles, you can't tell me they weren't having a great time. I think the best part was when Carter walked away for a minute and Tucker spotted his McDonald's cup. He took off and drank as if he were a camel in the desert. Poor Carter came back to an empty cup. This night I had to beg and plea with them to wrap it up and come inside for their baths. Boys will be boys, I suppose.

These days are quick. When they grow up and have kids of their own, I hope they remember days like this. Dirt, giggles, tractors, and each other.

Mud boggin' & "MonKer trucks!"

Mud, big trucks, loud engines, and boys go hand in hand. One weekend we decided to ride to one of the local mud bogs, Soggy Bottoms. The boys were both super excited. They could not wait for us to park so they could unbuckle and start watching. Tucker was in sheer amazement. He loves him a good 'ole "monker" truck. Anything with the slightest bit of a lift on it, is a monker truck.

Watching the two of them hoot and holler reminds me that they will one day be teenagers... heaven help me. I have a feeling they'll find their way to the big mud holes. If they hoot and holler the way they do now at six and two, how on earth will they act when they are sixteen and nineteen?! Oh boy.
IMG_6637
They weren't very happy when we started to leave and are still asking to go back from time to time. We're taking them to the Monster Truck Jam in a few weeks to celebrate Tucker's birthday. He can not wait!!!

When he's not looking

I love catching the boys doing things when they have no clue that I'm looking.  This morning, I heard the front door slam shut and I knew that our little mischief man, Tucker, had escaped once again. As I headed out to get him, I noticed he had his guitar in his hands. I stopped dead in my tracks, turned back around and went for my camera. When I came back he was strumming the remaining two strings and singing his little heart out. If I would have tried, there is no way I could have removed the smile that was on my face. He was in his own world, completely content, and loving every minute of his guitar playing. As I watched him strum a tune for our dog, Cowboy, I couldn't help but think would he still have a love for music when he's older? He didn't once have a clue I was taking these shots through the window and the front door. So glad I was able to catch these... I must say, they're some of my favorites!

Puddle Jumpers

The boys are truly growing quicker than I ever dreamed possible. It seems like we were just playing outside while Tucker looked on from his bouncy seat. Now he's bouncing right along with Carter. Everything Carter does, Tucker does. If Carter says it, Tucker says it. There really is a bond between these two little boys that blesses my heart each and every day.

A few rain showers passed through our area and what do boys do? Boys find the mud. Big boys, and little boys.  When I looked out from the back porch I saw Carter making his way towards the biggest puddle he could find. It was just mere seconds and Tucker was hot on his trail. Moments later, Travis joined in the fun.  Their giggles still ring in my ear. I really don't know who was having the most fun. The boys, Travis, or me as I watched on. It's moments like these that I hear God telling me to take it in, embrace it, and forget the possible stained clothes or the fact that the sun is setting and bedtime awaits. This is the moment.

Mud was flying, giggles coming from both of the boys, Travis speeding around on the four-wheeler (dangerous... well, you know), and me just standing there in the driest spot I could find. Secretly, I was hoping that they would not even think about getting me as dirty as they were!

They weren't happy when the mud party was over, but that's how the cookie crumbles. I believe that they would go to bed dirty if I would let them. Must be a boy thing.

b.R.o.T.h.E.r.S

They're tough, rambunctious, loud, stinky, bossy, BOYS!
IMG_4867
The fight, they pick, they wrestle, and sometimes if we're lucky.... they hug.
IMG_4863
***Am I the only one that sees the problem here?***

They're lovable, squeezable, wonderful, giggly, beautiful *yes, I said beautiful* boys. Their my favorite part of everyday!
IMG_4862

Without their tender little voices, contagious giggles, mischievous behavior, and endless messes... my days would be oh so very boring.

Days like this one where they were running, giggling, digging in the dirt, are simply priceless!

It's steer time

There comes a certain time around here when the young bulls have to reach their destiny of becoming steers. For some of these little fellows, that time came this past weekend. I hate it for them, but I love watching Carter get in the middle of what's going on. I can't dare tell you what he calls this event. It's just too funny.  I'll have to keep that one a secret for a bit longer!!!  A few of the shots from the day.

Cowboy Birthday bash!!!!

Planning your first child's 5th birthday party, if you're like me, is a bit heart wrenching. How on earth did I come to have a FIVE year old?! How?!  Can someone please explain that to me?

When I asked Carter what kind of party he wanted he didn't hesitate at all.  With no thought at all he blurted out "A COWBOY PARTY!"  We did a cowboy party for his third birthday so I tried to get him to pick something else and he wasn't having it. So, a cowboy party it was. I suppose you can't take the true love of a cowboy out of my little man.

We invited all our friends and family for the bash. The day was scorching hot!  The humidity was unbelievable.  The kids didn't care since they had a water slide to play on and ice cold Coca-Cola awaiting them!  Carter loves to drink Coca-Cola out of the glass bottles. So when we found them at Sams we knew we had to get them. They seemed to be a big hit with all the kids.

Cake and present time!  Carter was seated by his cake and as we all started to sing he covered his ears and made his typical funny Carter faces. His friends Cody, and Lance sat right beside him. It made me smile to see him with his buddies and enjoying every minute of it. They both assisted in the blowing out of the candles.  As I stood there watching I couldn't help but think these three little fellows would begin a whole new journey starting next week as they entered the doors of the elementary school. I had to kick that thought quick before I started to cry.

On to the presents!  Who doesn't enjoy the present time of a party, I know I sure do!!  He sat patiently in the chair but as he ripped the paper from the box the excitement was building and he was ripping through those presents like a mad man!  His facial expressions are so vivid and full of energy.  I love watching him when he gets excited, it's fun!  He got everything from clothes, to monster trucks, to a chicken blaster game for his Wii, two remote control trucks, and his favorite... the bike!  There's no doubt this little boy is blessed.

As I look back on the day I'm reminded of how precious and perfect this dear child is to me. His smile, his laughter, his tender heart.... all perfect, all Carter, all my precious sweet boy!  I think I can say that he thoroughly enjoyed his fifth birthday party!  Here's to the next five.  May they be as adventurous and exciting as the last!!
